UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that the triple crisis of climate disruption, nature loss and pollution requires ambitious action.

“The Earth is facing a triple planetary crisis. Climate disruption. Nature and biodiversity loss. Pollution and waste. This triple crisis is threatening the well-being and survival of millions of people around the world,” the top UN official said in his message for the International Mother Earth Day, which falls on April 22 annually.

Guterres underscored that the “building blocks” of happy, healthy lives – clean water, fresh air, a stable and predictable climate – are in disarray, “putting the Sustainable Development Goals in jeopardy”, Xinhua news agency reported.

Talking about the hope of making a turn for the better, Guterres said that 50 years ago, the world came together for the Stockholm Conference. “It was the start of the global environmental movement. Since then, we have seen what is possible when we act as one.”

“We have shrunk the ozone hole. We have expanded protections for wildlife and ecosystems. We have ended the use of leaded fuel, preventing millions of premature deaths. And just last month, we launched a landmark global effort to prevent and end plastic pollution. We have proven that together we can tackle monumental challenges. And the right to a healthy environment is gaining traction,” he said.

Guterres urged the international community to do more to “avert climate catastrophe.”

“We must limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. We are far off track,” he said.

“To keep 1.5 degrees Celsius alive, governments must have cut emissions by 45 percent by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Main emitters must drastically cut emissions starting this year,” he said.

The UN chief also stressed the importance of “speeding the deployment of clean renewable energy.”

“We must invest rapidly in adaptation and resilience, particularly for the poorest and most vulnerable who have contributed least to the crisis,” he said.

On the Stockholm+50 meeting scheduled for June, the UN chief said that “let us make sure our leaders bring the ambition and action needed to address our triple planetary emergency. Because we have only one Mother Earth. We must do everything we can to protect her.”

Stockholm+50 is an international meeting convened by the UN General Assembly to be held in Stockholm, Sweden on June 2-3. The meeting offers an opportunity for nations and stakeholders to collaborate, share expertise and address complex nexus issues for urgent actions and long-term system change.

When PM Modi was welcomed at Brasilia’s Alvorada Palace with an Indian devotional song Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed with a special performance of Ram Bhajan at Brasilia's Alvorada Palace besides the grand ceremonial welcome ahead of the official talks with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal took to X to share a 2.48-minute video and wrote: "Upon arrival at the Alvorada Palace in Brasilia ahead of official talks, PM @narendramodi was welcomed with a special performance of ‘Ram Bhajan’." In the video, classical singer Meeta Ravindra Kumar Karahe is seen presenting a devotional song to welcome PM Modi. PM Modi, accompanied by President Lula da Silva, can be seen appreciating and enjoying the special performance, softly clapping his hands along with the tunes of the 'Bhajan'. Meeta Ravindra Kumar Karahe, speaking to IANS, said: "I met the Prime Minister yesterday (Monday/Brazil time) evening and simply greeted him with a 'Namaste' from a distance. I told him from afar that I would be singing for him the next day. The invitation I received was actually from the Brazilian government." She described the people of Brazil "quite similar" to Indians, majorly in terms of behaviour and hospitality. She said that despite living far from her homeland, Brazil -- which respects her native country a lot -- feels like "a second India". "I began training in classical music since childhood... from the age of 10-11. In the invitation that I received from the Brazilian government to perform, it was mentioned that President Lula wants someone from the home country of PM Modi should perform a devotional song that he likes," she told IANS. Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday was given a warm welcome by Brazil President Lula da Silva at the Alvorada Palace in Brasilia, as he began a State Visit to the country following his participation in the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. During their talks, both leaders agreed to boost the cooperation between the two countries across all sectors. PM Modi described President Lula da Silva as 'Chief Architect of the Strategic Partnership between India and Brazil', underlining that the Brazilian leader has played a significant role in "deepening our relations". "Held fruitful talks with President Lula, who has always been passionate about India-Brazil friendship. Our talks included ways to deepen trade ties and also diversify bilateral trade. We both agree that there is immense scope for such linkages to thrive in the coming times," PM Modi wrote on X, also shared pictures of his meeting with the Brazilian President. "Clean energy, sustainable development and overcoming climate change were also prominent topics of discussion in our talks. Other areas where we will work even more closely include defence, security, AI and agriculture. India-Brazil cooperation in space, semiconductors and DPI will benefit our people," PM Modi wrote on X. During a joint press statement with the Brazilian President, PM Modi said: "I sincerely thank my friend, President Lula, for the warm welcome in Rio and Brasilia. We are truly touched by the beauty of the Amazon and your kindness. Today, being honoured with the Brazil's highest national award by the President of Brazil is a moment of great pride and emotion not just for me, but for 140 crore Indians. I sincerely thank the President, the Brazilian government, and the people of Brazil for this honour." He said: "My friend President Lula is the Chief Architect of the Strategic Partnership between India and Brazil. He has played a significant role in deepening our relations. Every meeting with him has inspired me to work harder for the progress and well-being of both our nations. I dedicate this honour to his strong commitment to India and to our enduring friendship."

Herald case filed before Modi govt came to power, Cong should stop politicising issue: Sudhanshu Trivedi The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed its first chargesheet in the high-profile National Herald money laundering case, naming senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Sam Pitroda, among others. The chargesheet has been submitted to the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi, which is scheduled to hear arguments on April 25. Responding to the case, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh alleged that the government is misusing central agencies for political gain. Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi described the National Herald case as ‘fake’, slamming the alleged misuse of enforcement agencies for political vendetta. Reacting to the development, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi has said that Congress should keep this point in mind that this case was filed before the Narendra Modi government came to power at the Centre. On ED's chargesheet against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case, Sudhanshu Trivedi, while talking to IANS, stated, "Today ED has included the names of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the chargesheet in the National Herald case. This is a completely technical matter. The Congress party should note that this case started in 2012, and through a PIL, the Delhi High Court started this case in October 2013. This means that this case was filed even before the Narendra Modi government came to power. There is no basis for the Congress party to do politics on this issue." He further said, "This is a strange case in the history of India, in which a company which had assets worth thousands of crores was sold for a liability of Rs 90 crore. Apart from this, 76 per cent of the shares were owned by Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi alone. I want to ask the Congress that it was established by Pandit Nehru, and Associate General Limited (AJL) was established by freedom fighters. Many people had also raised objections that the shareholders had shares, yet it was given without asking them. I want to ask that even after the Congress ruled for five-six decades, how did the three newspapers established by Pandit Nehru go into losses, due to which they had to be closed. Did the Congress governments not support it at all?" Sudhanshu Trivedi said, "The claims of Congress officials and workers that freedom fighters and Congress had an emotional attachment to it. This case is proving how true this emotional attachment was. Congress' claims on both moral and technical grounds seem very hollow, baseless and motivated by malice." The BJP MP also praised PM Modi's leadership. He said, "When our government was formed under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, its goal was how the country can take a significant leap in the field of technology and create a broad base for the economic development of the nation. For example, promoting solar energy and establishing the International Solar Alliance and promoting defence production. A strong base and path for India's development has been created under the leadership of PM Modi."
