Two teenagers go missing at the start of Netflix‘s “Two Graves.” One night, Marta Salazar and Veronica Marin leave and never come back. Their killer remains undiscovered despite the police’s best efforts. Two years go by with no significant progress in the case. Isabel Marin chooses to investigate the case herself because she is fed up with the police’s incapacity and wants to know the truth about what actually happened to her granddaughter. However, the journey to the truth proves to be more sinister than anticipated, and it pushes Isabel to take actions from which she is unable to recover. BEWARE OF SPOILERS.
Two Graves Plot Synopsis
Isabel was close to her granddaughter, Veronica. The girl was her favorite, and on their final day together, Isabel gave her a new pair of earrings and they agreed to have lunch together the following day. But Veronica never appeared. She and her friend Marta had visited the town fair the night before. When last seen, the girls were getting into a car with Jonas Herrera, Veronica’s friend. He claims that after dropping them off at a location where they claimed to be going to see an unidentified friend, the girls vanished from sight.
Police investigated the disappearance, but nothing was discovered until fishermen discovered Marta’s body in the ocean. This sparked additional inquiries about what transpired that evening, but above all, what became of Veronica?
Isabel gets obsessed with solving the case on her own after two years have passed with no progress, but she is unsure of where to begin. That is, until Beltran, Isabel’s piano student, remarks that Veronica had the same earrings after noticing Isabel’s. Isabel is certain that Veronica wore the earrings after she entered Jonas’ vehicle, which makes this intriguing. As a result, she traps Beltran and questions him. He admits that the girls attended a covert gathering that included upscale individuals who paid for sex as well as drugs and alcohol. However, he is unaware of their fate.
This is a significant advancement, but at the same time, Beltran says so hurtful things about Veronica that Isabel kills him out of rage. This brings her to Marta’s father, Rafael Salazar, who is also in search of answers. Rafael and Isabel form an unlikely alliance because they are both willing to kill people in order to learn what happened to their girls that night. As Lupe, Veronica’s younger sister, struggles with depression and attempts suicide, things at home get worse. At this point, Antonio, her father, reveals the truth.
Who Killed Marta?
Who killed Veronica and Marta was the initial mystery, but Antonio reveals at the end of the second episode that Veronica did not pass away that evening. Since she is still alive, the question of Marta’s killer remains. As it happens, Beltran arranged for the girls to attend the party that evening. This was Marta’s first time, but Veronica was a regular and knew how to manage herself. She went to the party because she wanted to leave her home, where she felt suffocated by her controlling father, even though she didn’t need the money.
She assumed she would enjoy herself and return home, but instead she became intoxicated and became a simple target for men like the well-known TV host Carlos Jaen. Carlos raped Veronica after noticing her alone and bewildered after she had gone to get water for Marta. The assault had already occurred when Veronica discovered her, and it left Marta feeling completely shaken.
Marta made the decision to go to the police because she was depressed and disgusted. Marta wanted justice for herself, despite Veronica’s attempts to explain how this might be detrimental to them all. She couldn’t allow her rapist to escape with such ease. Marta wanted to commit suicide because she knew that after she told her father about it, he would kill the TV host, even if it meant that Marta would never be allowed to leave their home. She considered cutting her wrists as she picked up a broken bottle.
Veronica was cut in the neck by the bottle when she attempted to stop her. Veronica pushed Marta because she was upset that she had hurt her, and Marta died instantly after hitting her head on the bench.
Veronica went home and told her father everything because she was so shocked by what she had done. Antonio would have allowed her to go to the police if she had wanted to. However, Rafael Salazar was a dangerous criminal, and everyone in town knew that Marta was his daughter.
Even if the law prevailed, Rafael would still find a way to murder Veronica with his own hands because he would never forgive her for Marta’s passing. Antonio, fearing for his daughter’s life, forced Veronica to flee to Morocco and assisted her in disposing of Marta’s body in the sea. Although he reassured her that this was only a temporary circumstance, he was aware that his daughter would never be able to return home until Rafael was still living.
Do Rafael and Isabel Die?
Antonio kept his assistance in Veronica’s disappearance a secret from everyone, including his mother. He kept the secret while saving money so that he and Lupe could eventually take a plane to Brazil and be reunited with Veronica because he knew that the grief of losing her had to be genuine. Isabel, his mother, was not included in this plan since she had not been there for him in a meaningful way. She left him to live with the hippies when he was fifteen, and she had been intermittently present ever since. She made the decision to settle down and become a grandmother to Veronica and Lupe when she grew too old to maintain the lifestyle she had led as a child. Even though she is now alive, Antonio was afraid she would somehow ruin the secret, so he could never trust her with something so important. In her own way, she managed to thwart his plans, as it turns out.
Isabel refuses to listen to anyone and starts her own investigation even after Antonio and the police tell her to stop working on Veronica’s case. Antonio eventually tells the truth, but it’s too late by then. Rafael and Isabel have worked together, and they have located a crucial witness who may be able to help them uncover the truth. Jamila, a girl who attended the party that evening and left town soon after Veronica and Marta vanished, is this witness. Rafael finds her, but Isabel slows him down by having him arrested for Carlos Jaen’s kidnapping after realizing that Jamila would lead him to Veronica. Isabel discovers Jamila and nearly kills her while Rafael is at the police station, only to discover that she is living with Veronica.
As it happens, Veronica and Jamila met because she was lonely in Morocco without her family. After falling in love, Veronica made the decision to accompany her to San Jose. She kept her father updated on her safety even though she didn’t tell him where she was. Isabel becomes more focused after seeing Veronica again and realizes that her granddaughter will never be safe as long as Rafael is alive.
He exits the station in the meantime and travels to San Jose, where he locates Jamila’s address. However, before he can locate her, Jamila flees with Veronica and Isabel to the latter’s friend’s home. Isabel meets with Rafael and informs him that she has located Jamila because she knows he won’t let it go.
Isabel tells Rafael the truth as they get into her car, which she drives. Naturally, he is furious and asks Isabel where Veronica is. At this point, it is established that Rafael will not stop until he has exacted revenge on his daughter, regardless of how the situation is presented to him. Antonio was correct to stage Veronica’s demise in order to get her out of town. However, Isabel’s obsession destroyed everything, and now her granddaughter’s life is in jeopardy.
She must kill Rafael in order to make amends for her error, and this is her only chance to do so. In order to ensure Veronica’s safety, she drives the car off a cliff and into the sea, where she dies contentedly, knowing that Rafael is dying beside her.
What Happens to Jamila and Veronica?
Jamila was also present the night that Veronica accidentally killed Marta. She attempted to support Marta, who was obviously having a breakdown, when she happened to witness her being taken away by Carlos Jaen. However, Jamila left the scene of Marta’s death. She thought Marta’s father might have been involved when she found out the following day that Veronica was also missing. She moved to San Jose after fleeing the city out of fear for her life. After a while, she contacted Veronica, and the two of them were living together contentedly until Isabel entered the picture.
Rafael’s shadow also appears with Isabel, and the grandmother is aware that Veronica’s life will end if he discovers Jamila. She therefore chooses to keep the girls apart.
While Veronica is instructed to return to Morocco, where she had been living with her father’s friend, she takes Jamila to a hostel in San Jose. We wouldn’t rule out the possibility that Isabel was willing to sacrifice Jamila in order to save her granddaughter, given her commitment to Veronica’s safety and her near-fatal attempt to kill her. She attempted to tell Rafael the truth at some point, though, in the hopes that he would realize it was all an error, and before they could get to Jamila, they were both dead.
As Veronica travels to Morocco, Jamila remains at the hostel. But since Rafael and Isabel are no longer in danger, they can once more be together. They have the option of moving to Morocco or staying in San Jose.
That is not an option because Veronica will be arrested if she returns home because she killed Marta and fled. Antonio will probably find a way to combine the funds and carry out his initial plan to relocate to Brazil. Given their romantic relationship, it is possible that Jamila would also join the family as they attempt to start over. Antonio may also choose to let his daughter live her life as she pleases after observing that she is succeeding on her own. No one will be searching for her because she is thought to be dead.
Rafael was the only threat she faced, and since he is now dead as well, she doesn’t need to worry. Thus, while Jamila and Veronica have their happily ever after, the family will continue to communicate and perhaps even travel together.
