The Thursday Murder Club Plot Synopsis
Liz, Ron, & Ibrahim live at Cooper’s Chase. They meet each week on a Thursday. They have a murder club. They look at real cop cases from old files. Their new case is about Angela Hughes’ death. They can’t sort out the med bits of her death. Just then, Joyce Meadowcroft, who used to nurse, moves in. Liz gets her in the club when they meet. At the same time, Ian Ventham, who owns part of Cooper’s Chase, faces a big, pricey split-up. He needs cash fast. So, he plans to sell the home & make it into high-end flats.
Yet, his workmate, Tony Curran, blocks Ian’s goals. As his mom lives in the care home, he is not keen on the plan. A huge fight may soon start with both of them, putting Cooper’s Chase in a mess. Things heat up more when news hits of Tony’s odd death, hinting at a kill. Right off, Joyce is glad as her group can dig into a real, raw case. But, the sad death has big risks. It might cost all their homes. Knowing they need a real cop for this case, the club tries to get help from Donna, a cop they met once on a home safe talk. At first, Donna is not sure, but she warms up to the plan once Elizabeth & her pals get her into the kill case with a smart but smooth trick. Also, Liz gets some help and grabs the home’s money logs. Next, with Joyce’s girl, Jo, who runs a big fund, they find a third, unknown owner. At the same time, Donna finds a photo that links Tony to crime boss Bobby Tanner & Jason Ritchie, a fighter now on TV. Jason is Ron’s son. As they swap facts, they both dig more. Soon, all are shocked when Ian Ventham dies at a protest by the home’s grave site. Now, the group has two deaths to look into, with Bobby Tanner, the secret co-owner, as the top bad guy. Odd, but he’s the one who can stop the home from going bad. While this goes on, the cops find key proof that makes them lock up Ron’s son, Jason, as the main one to blame for Tony’s death.
The Thursday Murder Club Ending: Who Killed Tony Curran? What Was the Killer’s Motive?
From the start, Ian Ventham is the top pick for the guy who may have killed Tony Curran. But, the time the man was killed shows Ian couldn’t do it by hand. So, DCI Hudson & Donna think he may have paid another to do it. When they see Jason Ritchie’s name in Ian’s call list, at the time Tony died, things seem to add up. But, that idea is soon proved wrong. It turns out, Jason has a strong no-guilt proof. He was with Ian’s soon-to-be-ex wife. So, Ian is less likely to have set up Tony’s death. Now, Bobby Tanner looks like a key man. As the third backer, he stands to win a lot from Tony’s end.
By luck, Elizabeth found a clue that links her to the big bad boss of crime. She got a set of flowers at night. They had a note that warned her. The card with the flowers was like the one on flowers sent to Maud. So, the smart lady saw a tie to the flower shop. Guess what? When Elizabeth & Donna got to Thorny Blooms, they ran into Bobby Tanner. At the same time, a talk was held in Cooper’s Chase. After they met at the grave site, Bogdan, who works for Ian, got to know Elizabeth well. He then sat to play chess with her man, Stephen. Even with his mind not sharp, Stephen saw some truths about his wife’s hunt for a bad man. He saw that Bogdan was the bad guy all were after. At the same time, Liz figures out the same thing as Bobby starts to share his tie to Cooper Chase’s part-owners. It seems that the group brought in migrant staff to the land to use their work. After that, they took all passports to keep them at their jobs, & stop them from going back home. While Bobby, who has these staff at his flower shop, gives back passports now & then, Tony Curran keeps a much tighter grip. For this, Bogdan, whose mom was sick back in Poland, was very mad at Tony. So, he broke into Tony’s home to try to get his passport back. On the day he died, Tony caught Bogdan & hit him.
Thus, in self-defense, Bogdan fought back and ended up killing the businessman. The revelation of the migrant exploitation ring forces Elizabeth to see for herself. She then rushes back to the retirement home with the authorities, fearing for Stephen’s life. Still, Bogdan has no actual reason to harm Stephen, as he considers him a friend, especially since Stephen’s dementia may be less of a threat to him. However, as it turns out, Stephen has a habit of recording all of his chess matches so that he can remember them and study his opponents’ strategies later. Therefore Elizabeth announced that there is a tape recording of Bogdan’s confession. The unsuspecting killer is finally put into police custody, betrayed by his very own confession.
How Did Ian Die? Who Killed Him?
While—now that Bogdan is under arrest for Tony’s murder—there still lies the mystery of Ian’s death, the latter is killed out in public while amid a crowd of protestors. Wanting to develop Cooper’s Chase into a different kind of residential area, Ian is to start construction on the site to secure his plans. However, the retired-home residents vehemently oppose such an idea. Thus they, under Ron’s leadership, organize to try to halt the excavation of the attached cemetery grounds. During the protest, while Ian was moving through the crowd in frustration, somebody entered a huge dose of fentanyl into the businessman, who immediately expired. That automatically makes everyone at the old folks’ home itself a suspect. The perpetrator, however, turns out to be someone from a much more improbable realm.
There are many people in Cooper’s Chase who are against Ian and his destructive business ideas. Likewise, since almost everyone has access to pain-relieving drugs and syringes, there are many people with the right tools to conduct this secretive assassination. Only one, however, truly has the compelling motivation to seal Ian’s doom. That happens to be a close friend of the murder club, John: he is the husband of Penny, a founding member of the club. Penny had once been a police officer, the only woman among an otherwise all-male squad. Her contacts are how the club got their folder of cold criminal cases to begin with. However, Penny had her own secret, which had been buried in the retirement home’s cemetery many years ago. Ian’s plans to dig up the place would now expose her past atrocities. John comes to the same realization, which, in turn, drives him to kill the businessman to conceal the incriminating truth at the heart of his wife.
Who Killed Angela Hughes? What Happened to Terry Mercer?
This film’s events begin with the enigma of Angela Hughes’ murder. Elizabeth, with the help of her murder club, has taken that case from Penny’s archives to make it their newest mystery. Angela Hughes was a young woman who died in 1973. It was her boyfriend who saw the body; Terry Mercer. Per his version, he had heard a ruckus from the apartment of his girlfriend on the night of May 11, 1973. Soon after, Angela’s body, soaked with a fatal stab, was huristed out of a second-storey window. Terry claims to have seen a masked man through the window, but no one else could corroborate the existence of such a mysterious killer. Although the boyfriend vanished when the authorities came, the police actually bought his tale and cleared him as the main suspect.
The only female on the squad, Penny, was able to spot several holes in Terry’s story. While the medical reports alone suggested that Angela was not killed by the fall, it was the stab wound which actually caused her death. If Terry had indeed seen the woman fall from the window, he would surely have had time to at least try to save her life. In this way, he saw the fictitious masked man as an invention by the boyfriend that conveniently helped him cover his own tracks. Afterward, Penny sought out Terry Mercer and subjected him to a chilling, fatal punishment. After Angela’s burial, Penny and John, who would attend church services at Cooper Chase’s Father Mackie’s church, would bury the dead. For the same reason, Angela’s case was never brought up in any of the Murder Club’s various meetings. It is also why John went through all the trouble of killing Ian and covering up the circumstances regarding Terry’s disappearance.
How Did Penny and John Die?
Had it not been for some kind of dark twist of fate, Penny’s connection to the Terry murder would perhaps have escaped everyone’s attention. During the protests, Ian instructs Bogdan to exhume at least one grave to make the official digging procedure operational on paper. Somehow, the grave he or she blindly selected turns out to belong to one Terry Mercer, who was hidden there on top of an actual coffin. Accordingly, no sooner does everyone begin to realize that Terry, who until now had been missing, is, in fact, dead than Elizabeth speeds into connection with this matter. Penny is now confined to a hospice; the poor lady suffered a massive stroke, which has rendered her mute and incapable of moving anything. Hence, John has been at her bedside all this time, feeling the odd pang of helplessness because he cannot free his wife from some degree of pain. That feeling of helplessness actually becomes the catalyst that pushes him to kill Ian in order to keep Penny’s secrets safe. Now this threat stands farther away from John’s wife, with her future uncertain, as well. After all, both spouses will, no doubt, have been branded as murderers. Consequently, John requests to be given a short moment to bid his adieus before Elizabeth painfully reveals the truth about Terry and Ian’s deaths to the police. On some level, Elizabeth knows that her friend has ulterior motives with this request. Yet, she respects him and Penny and understands the reasons behind their morally dubious decisions. Thus, as the couple is left alone, John administers fentanyl to both himself and his wife to avoid a darker fate. In the end, the couple goes out together on their terms, avoiding a bleaker future of separation and legal complexities.
Does the Club Save Cooper’s Chase? What Happens to the Old Folks’ Home?
In the tale, key parts come from how the deaths link to Cooper’s Chase’s fate. When Ian wants to change the land to posh flats, Tony is the lone bar to his plans. For this same cause, Tony’s end hints at a grim time as his part of the home goes right to his work mate. Then, Ian’s death makes a like case, but this time Bobby Tanner holds the power. To one’s shock, the big bad boss wants no tie to the home. From the time he left his life of more overt crimes, Bobby has stuck to his flower shop work, a job he loves a lot.
In the story, important elements arise from the connection between the deaths and the fate of Cooper’s Chase. When Ian wants to develop the land into upscale flats, Tony stands in his way. This leads to a dark turn when Tony’s demise suggests that his share of the property will go to his coworker. Then, Ian’s death mirrors this situation, but now Bobby Tanner is in control. Surprisingly, the ruthless boss wants nothing to do with the property. Since leaving his past of more obvious crimes, Bobby has focused on his flower shop job, which he truly enjoys.
