The Gorge Plot Synopsis
‘The Gorge’ starts with Levi Kane, a retired military sniper, being approached by an official of the military named Bartholomew for a special task. While retired, Levi is a freelance gun-for-hire working for whomever will pay his rates. The mission is delivered unto him, and he is then airlifted to a secret destination somewhere else in the world. Simultaneously, in Pervalka, Lithuania, a female youth named Drasa is also given an unusual mission. She meets with her father at the graveyard near home, where they visit Drasa’s mother’s grave. Her father then finally informs her that he is planning to die shortly, but during the next Valentine’s Day. She gets distressed upon hearing this news, but he explains to her that he wishes to be in charge of his life, particularly since he is already dying.
Levi is left in the woods in the middle of nowhere. He walks further and encounters an enormous gorge covered with fog. There is a man, Jasper, who welcomes him and brings him up to date with the demands of his work. Levi must establish base on an observation tower at the west end of the Gorge. Jasper informs him that his task is all about making sure nothing gets out of the chasm and roams into daylight. On the opposite side of the Gorge is a tower looking over the region. Another individual similar to his is keeping watch over the eastern part, Levi is informed, and they do not have to talk to each other. As Levi becomes engaged in his mission, Jasper is air-rushed by a helicopter. Nevertheless, rather than being airlifted back to civilization, the latter is murdered by an attacker inside the plane. Months go by while Levi becomes engaged in his observation task. At times, he also spies on the inhabitants of the other tower using a binocular. Drasa is found to be the person spied upon. Even though both behave in a professional manner during their work, isolation of their profession begins to affect the mental state. On Drasa’s birthday, the young lady starts approaching Levi with handwritten messages on a pad. Levi also follows the same practice. The duo soon discover that the abyss creatures, or so-called “Hollow Men,” are making an escape. They work together to mow them down from their balcony of the tower. After that, Levi and Drasa sit for months talking from afar before one day the former chooses to devise a zipline method in order to travel between the two towers. He manages to do so, and the two then meet face to face for the first time in months.
The Gorge Ending: What is the Gorge’s Secret?
Following his meeting with Drasa in person and a day’s spending together, Levi sets off back for his tower. On his way back, however, some of the fleeing Hollow Men manage to trigger the bombs beneath his tower, which, in turn, shortens the zipline rope. Then, Levi is thrown right into the Gorge. Drasa sees it happen in front of her eyes. She does not even hesitate, gathering weapons and supplies, before leaping into the depths herself. The two weather attacks by some mutated animals before joining forces with each other. They begin searching for an escape route immediately after they had recovered from the shock. As they wander the open lands of the Gorge, they discover the whole area harbors mutated vegetation and wildlife that is determined to kill them one way or the other.
After a long time with numerous confrontations with the creatures in the depths of the abyss, Levi and Drasa come across a tiny shelter on one of the walls of the Gorge. They enter the room and discover it’s a World War II lab. They burrow through the different paraphernalia until Levi stumbles upon archived clips from an old experiment that was carried out in the facility. They screen it on an old projector, and at long last, they find out why the gorge’ secret. Somewhere around World War II, a team of scientists established a camp in a laboratory inside the Gorge to create biochemical weapons similar to the nuclear weapons that were created during the Manhattan Project. But the experiment failed when an earthquake struck the area, discharging the chemical agents in the missiles on the town outside. The chemical then changed and mutated all the living matter in the Gorge. Levi and Drasa are told that if they tarry too long in the abyss and are exposed to the fog, they stand a chance of being contaminated and might grow mutations similar to the creatures inside. The other continues searching through the wreckage until he locates a computer from a later time frame left inside the facility. Upon digging through the hard drives, Levi discovers that the facility is utilized as a research outpost by a private military contractor called Darklake. Darklake has the role of ensuring that the Gorge remains secret from the rest of the world and the individuals who are researching it with the aim of producing their own super soldiers. The company also hired Levi and Drasa to stand guard over the events. Afterward, however, they will be murdered just like Jasper.
What Happens to Darklake and the Gorge?
Drasa is kidnapped by a Hollow Man, Captain Bradford Shaw. Levi saves her, and they escape the Gorge on a car winch. In the tower top, Levi and Drasa make plans for what to do next and how to get away from the Gorge’s long-hidden secret before Darklake comes after them. Levi informs Drasa that they cannot depart until they ruin the Gorge and make sure no other person utilizes the location for future covert activities. He goes back to his tower on another zipline. When his regular radio call comes, Bartholomew personally addresses him via the call, inquiring as to why he ventured into the Gorge. He says he didn’t, and she guesses then that Drasa must have broken into the Gorge. She tells Levi to eliminate her, which he readily does. But what he doesn’t realize is that she already has information that Levi and Drasa broke into the Gorge.
Levi and Drasa come up with a plan collectively in order to defeat Darklake and end the cycle of guards being sent to the Gorge once and for all. They establish charges throughout the many cloaking devices deployed alongside the Gorge. Then they hide within the forest while Bartholomew and her Darklake goons arrive via a chopper at the observation tower. Immediately upon entering the tower, Levi and Drasa bolt into the forest deep within on opposite sides of the Gorge. They are accompanied indoors by a squadron of drones, which they eliminate singly. After they are clear of any distraction, they identify a hill where they establish a sniping post. While Bartholomew is preoccupied trying to locate Levi, Levi and Drasa destroy one of the clocking devices, causing a chain reaction through the Gorge that destroys all the devices en masse. The moment the cloaking devices are destroyed, the Straydog protocol of the Gorge’s silo comes into play. Bartholomew attempts to flee the zone of blast in time through the helicopter. But it is useless as the explosion forces the plane sharply off-course and kills it crashing down to doom. On the other hand, Levi and Drasa make a sprint as fast as possible to get away from the bomb themselves. Drasa escapes the radius easily, but Levi does not. His destiny remains uncertain after he jumps into a body of water to escape the blast.
Does Levi Survive? Does He and Drasa Get Together?
After the destruction of the Gorge, Drasa goes to Èze, France, where she and Levi vow to meet each other. But he does not appear at their planned meeting point. She receives instead a poem that he had left behind, the same one she had requested him to write about her. Drasa then gets a job at a shop in the picturesque French countryside, living quietly in tranquility. One day, Levi appears at the shop unexpectedly, verifying that he had survived the earlier explosion. Drasa hugs him, and the two have a delicate moment together, reconnecting free from the perils of their past life looming over them. Having endured a traumatic experience by themselves, they have proven that they are ready to move their relationship to the next level and begin anew together.
Maintaining the Gorge was an isolating experience that compelled Levi and Drasa to be apart for months with no human interaction. Consequently, they had each other for solace, particularly when protecting themselves from the atrocities of the Hollow Men slowly ascending the cliff stone walls. They are so lacking in any personal connection that they may have gone crazy if not for the fact that they had each other. They developed a strong connection over time, which is not only based on attraction but desperation for any kind of human interaction. They both have hardly anyone they care about in their lives and enter the mission thinking that they have nothing to lose. But after their experience, they come to understand that they have their relationship at stake from then on, which, thankfully, works out for them. Read More: Best Sci-Fi Movies on Netflix
